So did I, I don't like the idea of a fixed hard drive without interchanging
cards or some kind of disk! I believe this will put many Nature recordists
off this.....

Here's more information about the new Sound Devices recorders.

Previously these recorders' top quantization rate was listed as 24/96.
Now it appears that the top rate is 24/192.  Due to the appearance of
the Fostex FR-2, perhaps?

Recording at 24/192 requires about 2 gigabytes of data storage per
channel per hour, so the 20 gigabyte internal hard disc will fill up
fast!  The recorder uses a 2.5 or .18 inch laptop drive with standard
ATA interface, less expensive than the PCMCIA hard drive used in the
FR-2, but lacking its quick eject capability.
