It's not exotic, but it does work well. Telinga has a headphone amp 
available, or used to. gives good performance when I use mine. I can 
hear with it just as well as I can get recording.

You will not be able to amplify the Telinga by really huge amounts 
without running into self noise. It's a fairly quiet mic, but there are 
limits. You might want to try borrowing a stronger pre and seeing if 
it's going to help before laying out bucks on it.
