I agree on Li-ion. Though charging them is the most picky. And they are
pricey.

To my mind if needing a lot of power the best systems are the belt and
shoulder harness systems used by the video people. Some of them
practically live their lives with batteries like that, so I figure they
know what's most comfortable. Such a system would be fairly good going
through brush too. though I don't know about you and your shoulder deep
water...
