Having just returned (Tuesday) from a trip to Ecuador with lots of
hand-carried recording equipment (two separate M-S sets, two DAT
recorders, a pre-amp, 20 meters of cable in different lengths,
miscellaneous wires and connectors, and a hydrophone), I encountered
absolutely no problem going thru airport security or customs. Reason:
I carried all of the equipment broken down into its component parts
in a bag separate from my back-pack.
Most important and helpful, I brought with me a complete list of
every component in both English and Spanish and handed it to the
security folks (w/ a smile) the moment I arrived at the xray machine.
Our route took us from San Francisco to Miami to Quito to Baltra
(Galapagos) and back. At each point, much to my surprise, I was just
waived through.
