Sounds like what you really get is a fairly simple preamp and some
protection for that model recorder. When it was still around, you could
find the Sound Devices MP2 in that price range, and it has far more to
offer. Phantom power, M/S decoding, and good limiter, etc. And, of
course, is a excellent preamp and has XLR connectors.
You will still be using the consumer level A/D converter in the Sharp
either way. So this is not equivalent to something like the Marantz or
the Portadisc Pro MD's. It's a compromise. Did not sound like you were
getting digital output either. And, of course the D/A is the same
consumer level too.
