Doug,

I agree--Mics and settings are very important.  I used a pair of EV 
666 dynamic cardioids and the limiter/compressor set 'on' on my HHB 
Portadisc to record the following thunder clip:

Sound clip (with heavy rain) is from an 80 minute storm recording.
