The HHB Portadisc is generally considered the
best minidisc machine for nature recording.
The Portadisc is used by many members of this
group, with excellent results.
The Portadisc is designed to meet the needs
of professionals, and it has a price tag to match.
Expect to pay at least $1400 US for the "HHB
Reporters Kit" which includes a hard shell
waterproof case, Sennheiser mic and other goodies.
Recordists on a smaller budget get good results
using consumer minidiscs from Sony and Sharp.
When shopping for a consumer minidisc,
be sure to purchase a unit that has an input
for a microphone. Many of the less expensive
models have line level input only.
Minidisc.org has an "equipment browser"
that explains the differences between models.
Some recordists choose to use consumer minidisc
equipment because of its small size. The
Portadisc is about the size and weight of
your broken analog cassette recorder. Consumer
minidiscs can be easily carried out of sight
in a pocket.=20
Expect to spend close to $300 for the best
consumer models, such as the Sharp MD-DR7 or
Sony MZ-N910, and around $225 for models such
as Sony MZ-N710 or Sharp MD-MT290. Note that
the less expensive models record just as well
as the more expensive ones. The cheaper models
have fewer convenience features, and are
fractionially larger and heavier.
I have had some bad experiences on EBay recently,
so I can't recommend it as a reliable source
for bargains. Many members of this group have
used minidisc equipment, and they might be
willing to sell to you.
