There's a Windows compression program called 
"Litewave" specifically designed for audio files. 
It can be downloaded free for personal use at 
http://www.clearjump.com/products/LiteWave.html

Litewave includes a program that lets you
play back compressed files without restoring
them first.

Zaxcom plans to introduce a lossless
compression option in its new field
recorders.  The .ZAX file format 
achieves close to 3 to 1 compression
of audio files, without loss of data.
