The subject of field playback is controversial.
At a minimum you need to be cognizant of any
local regulations regarding playback. Playback
is prohibited in more places than you may realize.
And resist the urge to crank up the volume during
playback, lest all creatures flee before the
20 foot tall pygmy owl.

That said, here are three battery-powered speaker
sets designed to work with input from a minidisc
that offer reasonably small size and decent
fidelity:

Creative Labs Travelsound

Sony SRS-T77

SI-5 Gen II

page=product_detail&prod_id=15&mid=si_technologies

Each of the three costs around $80, weigh about 8oz,
and offer 2W x 2W stereo output.

To my ear, the SI-5 speakers sound the best,
but they are also the largest and least durable.
Eagle Creek has packaged the SI-5 speakers in a
protective cover for twice as much money:

A fourth option is a new, less expensive speaker
from TDK called "I'm A Speaker."

I have no experience with this model, but from
the photos on the web page, it looks like a
possibility.
