The holes are for weight reduction and to be certain I am not getting
a resonant tube effect. Have not tried anything but omni's if you
consider a mkh-110 to be an omni.
No frequency shifts, except doppler effect when hanging it out the
car window for testing. Probably thanks to the compression of the
foam in the tube. I used fairly thin stocking caps on it and I do
not hear any loss. It is much more transparent than fake fur.
On stereo image it has a bigger center than the "hemi" or "Blockhead"
but that is probably a good thing while being hand held. Still
sounds good.
On of these days I will record identical sound fields with my
different mics but I will not get to that until at least May.
I am currently finishing the mkh-110 modified, switchable to
original, sass, which has been a total nightmare for me.=20
Then I am going to toss together a 8 foot by 8 foot, three plane,
stereo, corner reflector microphone also using mkh-110's. This will
be semi portable using three sheets of 3/8" plywood and setup time
will be the amount of time it takes to carry the plywood to the site
plus 5 mins.
I hope to be ready. Recording season starts for me on 4/11 at which
time I will be once again, spring time, unemployed.
