I just returned from 3 weeks recording in Ecuador where I arrived with
Telinga, 3 microphones and power modules, 2 holsters, 2 minidisc and one
TCM
5000 recorders, 4 million batteries, 2 headphones, many cassettes and
minidiscs, and all the jungle stuff one needs for 3 weeks in the field. All
packed in 3 big suitcases and a carryon. All arrived fine and all had been
searched. I went thru 3 flight changes (San Jose, Miami, Quito) each way
and
a couple of internal Ecuador flights. I had no problems and nothing was
missing.
I also came back with 20 + hours of, hopefully, great recordings!
So..some good news for all!

John,
Was your luggage all unlocked? Did you have much of the equipment in
unlocked suitcases?
Thought: I have wondered,if the security at airports are putting those
nylon locks on your suitcases after they search them, then why not put
them on yourself before arriving at the airport, knowing they will cut
them off, but at least also knowing that your suitcase cannot be easily
opened until they cut them off.....of course someone with a knife or
razor blade could still easily get in, but I imagine airline employees
aren't supposed to be carrying knives and razors....so at least the
nylon locks would prevent a quick thief with quick hands and no blade....
