Going to a pc and the .wav format the bit order will be reversed. This
should not cause problems, but it won't be bit perfect in that the order
will have changed.

There should be no degradation of quality.

With rotating drum heads for video, Sony used to give their expected
life in hundreds of hours, but not thousands. Then there was a period
when heads were rated at about 5000 hours. Then the design changed yet
again. Definitely less than the 5000 hour figure.

Best you can do to increase the life of the drum & heads is minimize run
time. That includes heads rotating in pause. And fast forward/rewind.
The enemy is simple mechanical wear and accumulation of debris. The
other thing to do to decrease head wear is use quality tape. And clean
the machine. Typical recommendations are for a cleaning every 10 - 30
hours. Cleaning tapes wear the heads, but hand cleaning will not if done
right.
