Nagra Alternative

Core audio (discused on the list recently) are planning a
replacement to DAT ($500 approx) with 24/96 digital input.
Combine this with sony's new digital broadcast location mixer
DMX P-01 which has an SPDIF out at 24/96 and your signal
stays in the digital realm bypassing the core audio A/D's. If the
Core audio unit is up to scratch this is the solution I am going to
go for. N.B. the S/N ratio on the input of the sony does not quite
match that of an SQN but it is cheaper (2/3 of the price) and the
advantages of staying in the digital realm at 24 bit wordlengths
make it an excellent solution at approx $3500 all in - still more
fiddly than a Nagra (2 boxes not 1) but I believe it will match the
audio quality and probably weigh less.
All the best,
Tom
