Too true, there are days I could probably record it on clay tablets for
all the quality I get. Even if I manage to do things half way right, a
whole fleet of airplanes fly over or something. I'm sometimes amazed I
ever get anything decent.
It still is a good idea to get the best equipment you can possibly
afford. You will remember that quality long after the pain of buying it
is gone. And it's generally just more enjoyable to record with equipment
that just loafs getting the quality you want.
