That's about three years continuous recording. Though I assume it's 
probably more like lots of sites for shorter periods.

Presumably just certain factors of the sound. Do you know if he's trying 
for species recognition?

At least it's not preserved samples in bottles like it can be in 
Oceanography. The ships are expensive to run, so must be continuously 
used, so the sampling never stops. Those bottles require someone to sit 
with a microscope and tweezers counting what's found.
