Roger:

I'm curious about drive noise in the Nagra. Are they dead quiet, or do you
hear the drives spinning? This is critically important for nature recordists
such as myself.

Dear All

I have'nt taken mine to one yet, but have no hesitation in doing so.

Timecode is not on the standard machine

I have carried mine about on my shoulder over the fells of the Lake District
here in England, in the pouring rain, knocking it as you do and have had no
problems what so ever.

The pre-amps and A to D conversion are far superior to the Portadisc and
Portadat, I've owned a Portadat and borrowed the Portadisc for testing.
Sorry Walt and others but they are not a patch on the Nagra.

Having said all this, if I was not worried about compression, I would take a
Portadisc purely because of the ease of use with the AA batteries. The
Nagra runs on either D cells or a rechargeable Lithium.

The Lithium gives about 6-7 hours and the D cells 4 to 5.

If you are just going to collect specie recordings and not soundscapes, take
the Portadisc, nobody will hear the difference.
