in $10 of cables from Radio Shack to split out 1/8" mini to RCA, then RCA
back to 1/8" mini ~ that way you can swap channels and make sure it's not
a bad jack, bad amp on side, etc. in the MD... or you could just go
RCA-1/8" out of a known good source (i.e. CD) at very low level / low gain
into the mic input.

For the matched omni's I use a 'close match' is more like < .25 dB at 1
Khz. Ideally of course matched mics should stay close across frequency.
3 dB is out of whack I would guess, and certainly not what you want. Out
of curiosity, have you looked for variability across frequency?
