My thanks to you good folk who advised me (Nov. 26) on recording in the
vicinity of powerlines.
Clearly recording with a long cable directly under power lines is not a good
idea.
In the event, I checked the area several times, only to find that the birds
were not singing. I think it is a drought effect. When I had initially
noted the bird singing we had had an electrical storm and some rain the day
before. I checked at several different times during a few days without
finding any Cisticola singing consistently. I did find one whose territory
is well away from the power lines, however.
We had another storm on Thursday night and about 5:30 AM Friday I got what
would have been a quite good recording of this latter bird, using Klas's
excellent Telinga dish and mic. Would have been, but for the constant roar
of traffic from a highway about half a mile away.
Monday, I hope to post a copy to Vicki Powys, AudioWings Tape editor. If
she should consider it of sufficient interest to include in some future
AudioWings CD, I may get to hear what expert filtering can do to get rid of
the traffic noise.
Thanks again.
