Just another note, was wandering through the internet looking for other
parabolic reflectors (See what you started!) and ran across a diagram
for how to build the handle I was describing. Or at least one way to do
it, here:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/G_Kunkel/microphone.htm
This is very similar to what I was describing for the Telinga reflector.
This person used the 18" Edmond reflector I think.
You'd probably want to be just a bit more robust in the mic support, the
one shown would not be very brushproof. Though if the Telinga reflector
is used the focus is inside the dish, which provides a little
protection. Maybe put a piece of 3/4" pipe in the adapter and a end cap
glued on it. Work out the focus before cutting the final length of the
pipe. Cut away most of the pipe and end cap and mount the mic inside the
end cap by wrapping it in foam or such like to isolate it. In mine the
mic was mounted in a small plastic kitchen funnel, held in a small piece
of foam pushed into the funnel. The focus there was such that the funnel
acted as a baffle so that the mic could only directly 'see' the
reflector it was pointed at.
You also might want to back the rubber washers up with something a
little stiffer. You don't want the dish wobbling relative to the handle.
