Mine are all distant stuff. But it's a definite thing I'm working on,
frogs calling in a thunderstorm sound really good. I'm kind of expecting
the SASS mic I'm building to be a good one for this.

The easy way to handle the heavy thunder is to mask the mic with
something that will muffle the shock wave. It's kind of like doing the
reverse of the parabolic mic, where the reflector increases the gain.
Some mics also have settable sensitivity which may or may not help
depending on what's overloaded. Wrap a coat around it, or maybe just a
plastic bag.
