Exactly. And let's not forget that by this time next year we will probably
have 10gig drives in PCMCIA format, which would give you over 10 hours
uncompressed wav file recording, and many times that if you are prepared
to accept some compression. To answer some of your other questions :

Our current models have a 2 second pre-record cache

The built in speaker is 300mw. Whilst we appreciate that some people
require higher volume, the main issue in achieving this is the current
required to run a larger amp/speaker. We strive for the lowest possible
power footprint, to extend battery life as long as possible. Many people
using our machines for bioacoustic work in Europe also take out with them
a small PC type powered speaker.

The current file system we use seperates recordings into folders.

On our stereo recorder the PMD690, both XLR inputs have switcheable
phantom power.

This is good news! The 5GB Toshiba drive in
PCMCIA packaging costs about $325 today, and
continues to decline in cost each month.
5GB will hold about 7 hours of uncompressed
16 bit stereo WAV recordings.

Wish list for the new Marantz model:

-- small memory buffer while in record/pause
(as in HHB Portadisc, Sonifex Courier)

-- somewhat louder built-in speaker
   (200 mW is too anemic)

-- directory structure that supports
   subdirectories for the PCMCIA disc
(to organize many hours of material)

-- phantom power on both XLR inputs

Thanks for listening.
