This is really the problem. And they do make statements like this, found
at the top of their page on the recording workshop:
"The Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds is a leading resource for the
most current information on
 wildlife sound recording techniques, equipment suppliers, and storage
medium suppliers."

So, they are one of those that claim to be experts, and as Bernie has
pointed out that makes them someone to run from.

Outside control pad that plugs into a waterproof milspec cable
connector accessible on the outside of the case works just great,
