The new $350 Nomad Jukebox 3 hard disk
recorder/player offers real potential
for use as a field recorder. This version
adds optical input and 1394/Firewire output
ports, and it's lighter by a few ounces
than its predecessor.
The optical input would work well with a
portable mic pre-amp like the Deneke AD-20
(~$325), which has XLR mic inputs and
optical output.
The Nomad 3 employs a 20GB Fujitsu disk
designed for quiet running and built for
portable applications. For 16 bit WAV
stereo recording at 48Khz sampling,
1 hour of recording requires about
675MB storage. So a 20GB disk provides
space for almost 30 hours of high-quality
WAV recording.
