Oh you poor sole. I know that sound. You hear it just before your
wallet goes completely empty.
I am still at war with a pine squirel in the attic. If I seal him in
before getting him out he will drill into the house if he has to. So
far squirel 2, me 0. I hope you do better. At least yours makes more
interesting sounds.

Two possibles:
The jaws of a insect, species unknown, tunneling in the wood.
Or, the sound of termites tamping down their meal. Termites will vibrate
their gut section against the wood from time to time, often in a
rhythmic manner. I've always thought it was to keep things going in
their gut contents, but could have another purpose. It's the loudest
sound they make.
