I ran automatic recording apparatus (10 seconds every 6 minutes, for 12
hours a day) for a couple of years. Several mics with cables back to a
central weather-proof box. One cable had to cross a popular walking trail
in a National Park. It was black and blended well with the rainforest
background. I had it up about 10 feet above ground, but still wondered if
anyone would notice and take it - or follow to the end and take the mic.
No-one ever did.
