Chris - Interesting stuff there - and with implications for elephant conservation and breeding programs. I assume that the ones on their way to Taronga and Melbourne are of the smaller variety. About 18 months ago I was in Sabah (N Borneo) and saw what people were calling Borneo Pygmy Elephants along the Kinabatangan River. Once thought to be descended from elephants imported from mainland Asia, I beleive that they are now considered to be an endemic subspecies at least, maybe even a species. They were very noticeably smaller than Asian elephants I have seen in zoos, not much more than about 2m in height, from memory. If anybody has better information, I would be interested.
