OFFICIAL Hi Kim,
Just thought I’d forward these articles I recently came across, as I thought COG might be interested. Not all of them are new but are within the last few months. I found the first one particularly interesting.
The first wave of bird flu is the worst: what Australia can learn from overseas. The Conversation. https://theconversation.com/the-first-wave-of-bird-flu-is-the-worst-what-australia-can-learn-from-overseas-289721. Opinion piece on the potential impacts of the H5 HPAI outbreak in Australia from Bethany Hoye (University of Wollongong).
Experimental reproduction numbers disentangle vaccine effects on susceptibility and infectiousness during H5N1 transmission in geese. Preprint. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2026.09.02.748824v1 - suggests vaccination for H5N1 may not be as useful for controlling infection and onward transmission though reduces clinical impact of infection.
Environmental water management and H5 bird flu in waterbirds: context and scenarios for decision-making. Wetlands Ecol Mgmt. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11273-026-10193-1 - paper from the CEWH/CSIRO Murray Darling Basin project describing how environmental water management may be used as part of response measures to H5 HPAI outbreaks and how water management priorities may be impacted.
Kind regards, Rachael
