The Woodland Birds Survey for Mount Ainslie was conducted on 22 June 2026 by Michael Lenz and Brian Grinter. The morning started off with fog but developed in to a fine sunny morning as we progressed.
The most widespread species were Crimson Rosellas, Weebills, Australian Magpies and Noisy Miners which were detected in at least 5 of 9 sites . Other less common species included Varied Sittella (Site 9), Scarlet Robin (Site
9), Mistletoebird (Site 8), and a Wedge tailed Eagle (Site 7) that rose up into the sky from its perch on top of a dead gum. There were also some significant flocks of Gang Gang Cockatoo [7 birds at Site 1] and Superb Parrots [11
birds at Site 3].
39 species were observed during the survey. 30 species during the site surveys, and a further 9 species while walking between site - including four Flame Robins along the boundary with Majura grasslands. The number of species observed are up in
comparison to last winter (22 species).
As this was Michael Lenz's final survey at Mt Ainslie, I will take this opportunity to thank Michael for sharing his considerable knowledge of Mt Ainslie and its birds.
Regards
Brian Grinter
