I recently searched HANZAB for the word “Platypus” thinking I would get a list of species which preyed on Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) but I got some unexpected results.
Thirteen species were found ranging in size from Silvereye to Wedge-tailed Eagle. Obviously some did not prey on Platypus. A closer look at each species revealed why they were returned:
- Platypus (Omithorhynchus anatinus) was in the list of food items
- Wedge-tailed Eagle
- Whistling Kite
- Little Eagle
- Watched for prey disturbed by Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus)
- Fed in
Eucalyptus platypus (nectar/in flowers) (Eucalyptus platypus, known as moort or maalok, is a species endemic to the southwest of Western Australia)
- Red Wattlebird
- Purple-gaped Honeyeater
- Brown-headed Honeyeater
- Brown Honeyeater
- New Holland Honeyeater
- Silvereye
- Fed on insects from the Genus
Platypus (pinhole borers in family Curculionidae)
- Blue-faced Honeyeater
- Rufous Whistler
- Rufous Fantail
Just shows that you always need to check that the HANZAB search has returned what you expected.
As well as returning some interesting results, the search also showed a typo in Wedge-tailed Eagle where
Ornithorhynchus anatinus is spelt Omithorhynchus anatinus which will be corrected in the next release.
Changing the search to “Ornithorhynchus anatinus” was also interesting. Only two species were returned: Little Eagle and Azure Kingfisher (and Wedge-tailed eagle when typo corrected). A check to see why Whistling Kite was not returned located
another typo – anatinus was spelt anarinus. This will also be corrected in the next release.
Any help detecting typos in HANZAB would be welcomed. You can either notify me directly or add a comment in HANZAB.
Cheers
Steve
