Interest in subspecies is certainly increasing among bird-interested people. The popular Australian Bird Guide illustrates subspecies, including four named ones of A Magpie. Distribution of subspecies of many Australian
birds was greatly clarified by the 1999 book of Richard Schodde and Ian Mason, the map for A Magpie subspecies being shown here. That arrangement of subspecies was widely accepted, being used in Australian Faunal Directory, Atlas of Living Australia, the
‘IOC list’ etc English subspecies names were given in the BirdLife list
Just a couple of points about Australian Bird Guide. A small colourful version of the Schodde/Mason map is given, but not in 2017 edition - see revised edition 2019 or later. The illustrations in that rev ed show three
of subspecies terraereginae but none of tibicen. Those subspecies have recently been merged (see IOC list and AviList) so the illustrations might be regarded as relating to
tibicen. Next: beyond HANZAB
