During the cricket there are also a lot of black birds flying around or on the grass.  It is these, rather than the egrets, that seem to occupy the ecological niche of our cricket-watching gulls.  Probably House Crows, building up to International Crow and Raven Appreciation Day in April.  That day, not widely celebrated in Australia, seems to have been inaugurated with the northern hemisphere ‘Crow’ and ‘Raven’ in mind, and not by serious taxonomists.

As I recall the local swan banding project is no longer current so reports are not needed.  However the markings are perhaps still useful to monitor longevity?  This one at Jerra yesterday was bird - 045 or - 049.  Those who think local swamp birds get too much attention might be interested in my sighting a few minutes ago of a dozen  Eastern Cattle Egrets feeding on the cricket oval hosting the test match at Galle.  The Sri Lanka equivalent of Silver Gulls?
