Hi Jack,
Where abouts in Kambah? I raised an EK chick at my place. It was released but came back nearly every day for food.
However, it was not quite independent and I had to catch it and put it in an aviary with an adult female Koel in Curtin. It was almost feeding itself but I moved and was not certain it could survive, especially as the new people in our home have a cat
and and a dog.
cheers,
Marg

I finally confirmed my Yarralumla Koel fledgling this morning when a large golden one was first heard and then seen fly for at least 30 m into the same Oak as on 2 December. Certainly, it was quite
advanced by now, though still fed by a Red Wattlebird. Surprised to observe such an early one which must have been from an egg laid in the last fortnight in October. Adult Koels have been very conspicuous in my local area for the past fortnight, with females
often sitting quietly on wires for quite long times, at least 15 minutes on one occasion. Jack Holland
Thanks Nicki, that’s the second confirmed one for the season of which I am aware. On 3 December Stan Jarzynski photographed a begging one at his place in Kambah which appeared to be an orphan because
there was no host around. After he fed it plums it disappeared and was not to be able to be found again. I was pretty certain I heard on in Yarralumla the day before that, there was continuous begging which I couldn’t locate in a very big leafy oak but could
not find again despite several searches in the following days. Very interesting for young fledglings to be so mobile?

A recently-fledged Koel in Bruce this morning, attended by a Wattlebird. A couple of adult Koels calling vigorously close by.
