This morning I watched some interesting behaviour between two male Koels.
They were on the roof of a house in Hawker (Jack I have photos I will post
on CNM) and having a stand-off. After my first sighting the dominant one on
the left, lay almost flat on its belly and slowly crept up the roof to where
the other was standing. As the aggressor got closer the other one slowly
moved further and further down the roof. The more dominant one also began
moving down the roof until finally they were almost beak to beak. I was
expecting an altercation but the pursued bird then made its way up the
adjacent roof incline to the top of the next ridge, once again pursued by
the second bird. Eventually it flew into a tree behind the roof and a few
minutes later the victor flew off in the other direction. No sight or sound
of a female. The whole process took around 10 minutes and there was some
twitching of feathers or spreading tail feathers by both birds during the
pursuit.
Very interesting to watch.
