Subject: [Canberrabirds] Large fungus

 

The fungus in the attached photo is growing on the nature strip of Hobart Avenue.

The image might look like a rock but it is a fungus well rooted beneath the point where the depression is in the middle.  It appears that the left-hand side has been broken away but you can see its size.  The shoe beside it, which happens to house my wife’s foot, is about 23cm from tip to heel.

 

The fungus is situated beneath eucalypts which I think are Blue gums, Eucalyptus bicostata.

 

I haven’t seen such an organism before, to my knowledge.  Are they common around Canberra?
