David - I’m afraid I can’t be much help on this. You always come up with interesting things at the margins of this chatline’s field of concern, but I myself would emphasise the interesting rather than the marginal. There is so much
out there to discover. I was interested to learn from an interview on ABC radio this morning that the Saltwater Crocodile is nearly extinct in mainland Asia.

Subject: [Canberrabirds] Large fungus
The fungus in the attached photo is growing on the nature strip of Hobart Avenue.
The image might look like a rock but it is a fungus well rooted beneath the point where the depression is in the middle. It appears that the left-hand side has
been broken away but you can see its size. The shoe beside it, which happens to house my wife’s foot, is about 23cm from tip to heel.
The fungus is situated beneath eucalypts which I think are Blue gums, Eucalyptus bicostata.
I haven’t seen such an organism before, to my knowledge. Are they common around Canberra?
