How interesting.  I have no reason to question Ben’s convincing report.  As an occasional dog-walker in Carstenz St, usually at the upper or Jansz Cres end, I’ll certainly keep an eye out for it.  As a 2-dog walker I probably do not have quite same freedom for incidental bird-spotting as your 1-dog walker.  There are certainly Spotted Doves adjacent to the nearby Griffith Nature Park, which Ben has ruled out.  Just one point, I am unable, no doubt my own fault, to find the mentioned location pin through the link Ben has supplied.  Having recourse to the eBird map for the species, I find no record of a Brown Cuckoo-Dove anywhere near Canberra, all to be updated in due course, I suppose.

Hi all,

While walking my dog yesterday evening I finally got a clear sighting of a cuckoo dove on Carstenz St. While I did not have my camera on me, I had a very clear view of the diagnostic features (see my ebird submission https://ebird.org/checklist/S179092641 for details) as it perched in a bare tree only 35 metres from where I was standing for several minutes, before flying towards me and into the cover of a magnolia tree.

Unfortunately by the time I was back with the camera it was getting dark and there was no sign of the bird, but I would assume it is still in the area somewhere.

Hi all,

Yesterday morning I heard what I am fairly certain was a brown cuckoo dove from my back deck in Griffith, calling from somewhere in a private garden a few houses away. The bird called approximately 30 times over the course of 5 minutes and was probably less than 100 metres away, but unfortunateIy it was not visible from my garden.

Earlier today I went on a walk around Griffith, Red Hill (the suburb) and Forrest to try to relocate it, but to no avail.

Ben
