I think in the case of Darters it’s just that hills have thermals and they love to soar. 

But I have seen various spp of cormorants in odd places far from water. I was on a walk in Hughes once and saw a flock of 12 Little Pieds. I said ‘look, an omen!’ My wife said ‘what does it mean?’ I said ‘you will eat fish today’!
