Would you like to take your birding to the next level and become involved in an important ongoing citizen science project?
Canberra Birds (COG) is working with Birdlife Australia to find two volunteers to undertake ongoing water bird surveys at Lake Bathurst (between Tarago and Goulburn). This survey work is part of Birdlife Australia's
Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) program. KBAs are places of global significance for the conservation of birds and other
wildlife, with Lake Bathurst being one of 334 Australian KBAs.
The Lake Bathurst surveys take place twice yearly in spring and autumn, though the current surveyors like to go more often than this. Lake Bathurst is on private land, so while you have the opportunity to visit somewhere not normally accessible to birders,
you also need to be able to work well with the landholders to arrange your access for each visit.
The ideal people will have good bird identification skills, be happy to walk 6-8 km across sometimes wet and uneven ground and be able to climb a fence or two. Having access to a spotting scope would make the work easier as counting birds out on the Lake
is part of the job. Interesting shorebirds sometimes turn up at Lake Bathurst so comfort in identifying these will be an advantage. You will need to put aside about 4 to 6 hours per visit.
You won't be thrown into the role without help. The Birdlife Australia KBA coordinator will provide support and the current KBA Guardian will also help you get a good start with what to do.
To express interest in this very interesting survey, please send a short email to Mark your email 'Lake Bathurst EOI' and include your name, a contact phone number and a sentence
about why you would like to take this on. If you have questions or would like more detailed information, include them in your email and you will be contacted.
