Throughout the past week I’ve had several sightings of male Superb Parrots feeding in elms near the Holt Oval, my first since early last summer.

During the past winter I’ve been particularly impressed by the large flocks of Red-rumped Parrots feeding on nearby sports grounds. Some flocks totalling 30-odd birds. I find they’re frustrating little critters to count accurately, particularly with the cryptic females bobbing about in the grass. However, the big herds of red-rumps have disappeared for now, probably dispersed to breeding areas. Then, a few days ago, a pair landed in our garden and fossicked about in ankle-length grass. Wow!

Ho-hum, you may well say, but not around here where I believe it’s the first time I’ve recorded the species actually on our block in over 30 years. I now await with bated breath a drop-in from some superbs.
