We have been in Canberra for the last week and have heard Koels everywhere we have been.  Sites include Reid (every morning), Canberra Croquet Club (3 days)and Kelly's Swamp (2 days).

Not five minutes ago a male landed in a large tree just outside the lounge room window and gave wurra wurra, rather than wirra wirra calls, a couple of times before being swooped upon by a Red Wattlebird which landed and hopped about on the same limb while the koel ignored it. Then four Magpie Larks swooped and the koel flew away giving forth a few more wurra wurras as it went with the others in pursuit. As I’ve mentioned previously, Koels are an uncommon visitor to our garden.
