Many thanks Alison, Mark, Terry and Ken, my experience is very similar to Mark’s.  I’ve only had a male and female calling together in my GBS site in week 42 (mid October), and since that calling has been pretty quiet, almost always males calls (both), though I did hear a whaos/kek kek duet this afternoon, and often at least mid distance.  Amazingly I have yet to actually see one.

One possibility is that they are already in full breeding mode as they are often quiet like they were during the incredible late summer/early autumn period earlier this year.  Another possibility is that the wet conditions, especially in November, has influenced them to behave differently, or to go elsewhere.  The Nest Workshop at Campbell Park last Sunday was quite different this year as birds seemed to be either in the late part of the breeding cycle, ie feeding fledged young, or young just about to fledge, or still pairing/in the early stages of nest building,  Very unusually we saw no birds actually on the nest.

Time will tell, if breeding is already in full swing the first fledgling may be expected in 2-3 weeks’ time, so please keep an ear/eye out for them.   Jack Holland

On a contrary note to Alison's, the koels around my GBS site, after I recorded three in week 44 and one in week 45, have gone quiet and I haven't heard one at all this week. I think others have also noted this and am not sure why it is happening other than the persistent wet weather may have had some influence on the birds. Anyone got any ideas?

Jack,

I can now confirm two male and two female Koels at O’Sullivan Street Higgins.

The two males were in the tree in my neighbour’s front yard while the females were in a tree in the back yard. They stayed in their respective trees, occasionally calling, for well over two hours.

Around 5:00 the females began to make a move  and they are now all currently flying round the area, calling.

Alison
