Usually in my home suburb (Hughes) I hear male Koels for a few weeks, then eventually see a male, with sightings of females and their calls in the few weeks after.

However my first koel of the year this year was a female flying by the window this afternoon whistling in distress with a whole colony of Noisy Miners in pursuit.
