By their very nature crematorium s are generally discrete places.  Shouldn’t be any environmental issue either as they retain/pass on contents of burns, combustion is very hot (meaning low byproducts and they use clean gas) around 2000’C with no smoke.

I saw that, and have had a look at the plans a little while back when the notification surfaced on facebook, I have no real problem with it. Plenty of trees look like they will remain. The similar facility out at Mitchell is hardly a disaster for wildlife for example.  It is unlikely to be built over once opened and 'demand for its services' is not going to go away. The site could be used for far worse, a 'resource recovery' centre or something similar for example.  Its a dump (literally) right now.  As for the comments about barking dogs, that facility could be easily and cheaply moved if required.

This proposal is a few years old now, but a Development Application has now been lodged and a description of the proposed development has just appeared on the RiotACT site (https://the-riotact.com/plans-lodged-for-private-crematorium-on-south-side/494709).
The DA can be found on the ACT govt site (go to https://www.planning.act.gov.au/development_applications/pubnote#S and scroll through to the Symonston entry).

THe land is privately owned, and shares a fence with Callum Brae Reserve. There are a number of mature eucalypts on the site, and the dam (visible from the fence with Callum Brae Reserve) is usually host to one or more Australasian Grebe.

Submissions commenting on the proposal can be made until 29 September.

Personally I'm a bit ambivalent. I had always hoped the govt might acquire the land and add it to the reserve, but with that always unlikely, there are probably much worse  uses than a crematorium. Traffic on Narrabundah Lane might occasionally be an issue.  I'm not sure I'd want to sit and  reflect on a loved one in a memorial garden across the road from the dog pound with its constantly barking dogs!
