The actual origin of the term twitcher comes from two British birders who used to chase rarities all round the UK regardless of the weather. They travelled on a Matchless 350 (ie a motorbike
) and shivered uncontrollably. Vide Mark Cocker "BirdersTales of a Tribe "pp 52-3.
