The flock of RBF in the native grasses behind Kangaroo Close Nicholls (along
Ginninderra Creek) fell from a high of 30 RBF 4 years ago to as low as 12 in
late 2019. All this has been reported on the chatline as has my efforts to feed
the little flock and save them from the drought. I am delighted to report that
I counted 41 RBF today at my bird feeder. They have bred at least 6 times
during this good season. What I mean, I suppose, is that on six separate
occasions about a month apart I saw young RBF brought to the bird feeder. They
were obvious by the black beaks and lack of the red brow. They nervously
stayed back in the bushes at first and the adults fed them but after a few days
they ventured to the feeder themselves. The last of these breedings was in a
nest in my own yard and the fledglings were at my bird feeder in early June,
after the first frosts. I still only get 2 DB Finches at the feeder. I am
really pleased at the increase in the flock and take a little bit of credit
for feeding them through the famine.
