I am reasonably satisfied now that my scrabble playing friend who showed me
the photo on her mobile phone, accompanied by distinct whoop whoop call , did
actually see this very rare visitor to the ACT.
Although she promised to forward it on to me , for some reason it has not
arrived and I will make further enquiries.
However, I will say emphatically that my viewing of the fairly good photo of
this bird in tangled foliage of a tree , clearly indicated a bird similar to a
koel in some ways , but significantly larger.
After checking with my Menkhorst field guide this evening , I note that the
length of a male bird is in the range of 50- 70 cms whereas the eastern koel
is a smaller 40 - 46 cms .
I seem to recall a sighting of the pheasant coucal in the ACT area some years
ago and need verification by some well informed reader in the chatline forum.
