Ducklings - wood ducks

Out of area, but may be of interest.
I’m currently on the Central Coast, staying at the Umina Beach caravan park,
where a pair of Masked Lapwings have two very small chicks, and another Masked
Lapwing (one of another pair) is sitting on 3 eggs in a prime camping site!
Park staff have been alerted and the area cordoned off. They successfully
survived quite a busy weekend. In my previous experience Masked Lapwings have
aggressively defended chicks and nests but these birds have showed no signs of
aggression despite relatively close contact.

Also of interest is an Osprey nesting on top of a Norfolk Island pine tree on
Riley’s Island while very close by is what appears to me to be a specially
erected nesting platform. (I may be wrong about that).

A big surprise while visiting the Australian Reptile Park was a Buff-banded
Rail (I think normally quite secretive?) out in the open and feasting on chips
being thrown to the multitude of Rainbow Lorikeets and Mallards by lunchtime
diners.

Cheers

Rod
