At Pegasus Riding School, Holt this morning I noticed a Pallid Cuckoo perched quietly on a fence post. I crept to within 15 metres before it flew away. The post had a smattering of whitewash that was studded with the remains of tiny black caterpillars.

Yes, I know twenty Welcome Swallows don’t make an early spring but a flock of around that number was swooping around Pegasus, at times down to less than two metres.
