This morning for the first time in 43 years, I had a group of 10
White-winged Choughs land in my garden in Kaleen. There were at least
two birds that were 4+ years old going by their eye colour and several
birds of various ages including a couple of this year's young. They
spent about 20 minutes foraging and eating seed that I scatter for the
local Crested Pigeons before retiring to roost in a Brittle Gum in my
backyard. Of particular interest to me was that two of the birds were
banded, one with an easily readable large white numbered colour band.
The one with the single metal band came right up onto the back deck and
I managed to get at least some of the band number but other birds kept
getting in the way and I couldn't get all the number. I am sure that
these birds are part of the study being done by Connie Leon and Rob
Heinsohn from the ANU. I have reported the sighting to the bird banding
scheme and if there is anything interesting in their reply I will pass
it on.

COGgies in Kaleen and Giralang should keep an eye out for these birds.
If you see any of the banded birds, including the one with the large
white numbered band please record the number and  let me know the date
and locality and I will pass the sighting on to the banding office. They
will get back to you with he banding details.

There are quite a few birds around Canberra with these readable bands so
keep an eye out for them.

Cheers,

Mark
