In the Higgins block bordered by Kingsford-Smith Drive, Findlay Street,
Kinsella Street and Drake-Brockman Drive, there are eight magpie families all
with young chicks (up to three chicks for some families).

I've sighted up to four Koels in the neighbourhood (two male; two female) with
at least some still around, along with quite a few Red Wattlebirds. At least
one wattlebird family nested early as there are three well fledged chicks
regularly visiting my birdbath. Never found any dead wattlebird chicks but one
year did witness a currawong flying off with a young chick - much to my horror.

I found my second dead Red Wattlebird chick this morning. Both were at the
nestling stage but apparently ready to try to leave the nest. This seems to me
to be fairly usual - I generally find a dead Red Wattlebird chick or two every
year. There was no obvious trauma.

What does seem to be different is the reduction in audible begging by Red
Wattlebird chicks in this suburb. Some begging is occurring - including by
chicks that have left the nest - or even chicks that are still in the nest, but
it seems to me that there is a lot less of it than usual.

I am no longer hearing young begging magpies at all. I doubt that any
fledglings around here have survived the drought.

regards

Con
